Sampdoria has rebounded from its UEFA Europa League debacle but one thinks that it may fail its stiffest Italian Serie A examination so far this term when it faces Torino on Sunday.
The knives were out for new Sampdoria manager Walter Zenga after Samp suffered a 0-4 UEFA Europa League home loss to Vojvodina. Sampdoria won the second leg 2-0 to restore some pride and it has begun its Italian Serie A campaign with two wins and a draw. However, Sampdoria’s two Italian Serie A victories have come at the expense of visiting promoted sides Bologna and Carpi, plus it was heading for defeat at Napoli before Eder netted two goals in three minutes.
Both Torino and Sampdoria have accrued seven Italian Serie A points but one thinks that there is more depth to the form of the former. Torino kicked off its Italian Serie A program with a 2-1 win at Frosinone and one thinks that visiting a promoted team in the first round is more difficult than hosting one. Torino followed up that away success with a 3-1 home defeat of Fiorentina and it gave as good as it got in its entertaining 2-2 draw on the road to Verona last week.
Italian Serie A punters will know more about the merits of Torino and Sampdoria after Sunday’s clash but one is willing to take a punt on the Maroons at odds of -114 with Marathonbet, not least because they won last term’s corresponding fixture 5-1 – Fabio Quagliarella helped himself to a hat-trick.
Chievo and Internazionale are second and first respectively on the Italian Serie A ladder after three rounds and one thinks that bookmakers are either not affording sufficient respect to the former or overrating the latter based on their markets for Sunday’s showdown in Verona.
Internazionale does appear to be heading the right way under Roberto Mancini but each of its three Italian Serie A wins have been by a single-goal margin and two of them required late winners. Bookmakers are inviting punters to bet at not much bigger than even money that Internazionale extends its 100 per cent Italian Serie A record with an away win over a Chievo side that has started its season in excellent style.
Chievo came from behind to win its Italian Serie A opener 3-1 at Empoli, then it walloped Lazio 4-0 at home and last time out it got within a handful of minutes of defeating Juventus in Turin and joining an extremely exclusive club.
Away victories are hard by which to come in Italian Serie A and one cannot help thinking that Sunday’s match between Chievo and Internazionale is a classic example of a game in which it is easier to make a case for backing the draw than either of the sides. And it does not hurt that the draw is close to being the outsider at odds of +230 with several bookmakers, including Bet365 and Coral.
Finally, both Napoli and Lazio will be backing up from UEFA Europa League action when they lock horns in Italian Serie A three days later. The UEFA Europa League fixture computer has been kinder to Napoli than Lazio – the former has a home game against Club Brugge, whereas the latter has an away game against Dnipro – and the difference in their foreign assignments points one in the direction of the Partenopei.
