Both Sociedad and Gijon featured in goalless draws in the first round of the Spanish Primera Division and one thinks that under two and a half goals, an option that is trading at odds of 31/501.62-1610.62-1.610.62 with Bwin, is the best bet in the second round.
Sociedad kicked off its Spanish Primera Division campaign with a 0-0 draw at Deportivo in which goalmouth incidents were far and far between. Twenty-three of Sociedad’s 38 Spanish Primera Division matches last term went under two and a half goals and, judging by the results of its games over the last couple of months, one would take short odds about its fixtures being fairly uneventful this season – each of its seven friendlies that Soccerway logged went under two and a half goals, with the David Moyes-coached side finding the back of the net on only two occasions.
Gijon can be forgiven for not scoring a goal on its Spanish Primera Division return because it lined up at home to Real Madrid. However, it is not as easy to overlook the failure of Gijon to register a shot on target against Real Madrid, plus it was far from prolific when securing promotion from the Spanish Segunda Division. For example, Gijon scored 57 goals in its 42 Spanish Segunda Division matches, of which it netted just 21 on its travels – 10 teams managed to net more goals on the road than the second tier’s runner-up.
Only two of the 10 games in the Spanish Primera Division first round went over two and a half goals and, if one was looking for a second-round match to recommend to a neutral observer, Sociedad versus Gijon would not make one’s short list. It has the potential to be as dull as ditchwater.
Another Spanish Primera Division game that may be light on for goals is Sunday’s clash between two of Spain’s five UEFA Champions League qualifiers, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
Last term’s Spanish Primera Division match between Sevilla and Atletico Madrid on the south coast ended goalless and there are several grounds for betting on under two and a half goals again this time around at odds of 7/101.70-1430.70-1.430.70 with many bookmakers, including 888Sport and Unibet.
Sevilla fired blanks in its Spanish Primera Division opener away to Malaga, Atletico Madrid’s default approach under Diego Simeone is not to beat itself and, at such an early stage of the competition, one thinks that both teams would settle for a low-scoring draw if it was offered to them.
The Spanish Primera Division is a high-scoring league but 10 of Sevilla’s 19 home games last season went under two and a half goals and Atletico Madrid had the same strike rate in its 19 away matches. Those kind of numbers did not apply to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia – not even close.
Finally, speaking of Real Madrid, one thinks that it will be far too strong for Spanish Segunda Division champion Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu. The option that appeals above all others is Real Madrid to beat Betis to nik, which BetVictor is allowing punters to snap up at the tasty odds of 19/201.95-1050.95-1.050.95.
Betis lost a pre-season friendly 0-3 to Atletico Madrid so it is fair to say that the gap between it and the Spanish Primera Division heavyweights is significant. Betis, if it is going to survive in the top flight, will look to collect most of its points at its imposing home ground. Real Madrid will be desperate to move on from its 0-0 draw at Gijon and one expects that the Meringues will be fully switched on.
