Genoa to crush archetypal crisis club Parma

Genoa, fresh from getting a point from its Italian Serie A derby against Sampdoria, is the best bet on the Round 25 coupon provided that Parma turns up to play on Sunday.

Crisis club is a term that football journalists overuse but it is the only way to describe Parma, which is a whopping 13 points adrift of Italian Serie A safety and had to postpone its home game against Udinese this time last week. Parma is a far cry from the team that was among Europe’s finest in the 1990s and it is not whether Parma will exit Italian Serie A at the end of the season but where it will end up.

The mood in the Parma squad must be terrible even though its captain, Alessandro Lucarelli, had told reporters that the players are determined to keep doing their job to the best of their ability to respect everyone associated with the club. Well, what else was the Parma skipper going to say.

Genoa, which overcame the sending off of Facundo Roncaglia to defeat Parma 2-1 on the road in the reverse Italian Serie A fixture, has a few players on the sidelines but none of them is a regular starter so Gian Piero Gasperini should have his strongest possible side available to take on the weakest team in the division and an unmotivated one at that.

With UEFA Europa League qualification on its mind, Genoa is trading at what one thinks are generous odds of -189 with many bookmakers, including Bet365 and Betfred, to capitalise on Parma’s problems, snare three Italian Serie A points and extend its league unbeaten run to five matches.

EDIT – The Genoa v Parma game has been called off.

One is willing to take a chance on Atalanta landing odds of +163  with Betfred and defeating injury- and suspension-hit Sampdoria even though the Orobics have lost each of their last three Italian Serie A games conceding nine goals.

Atalanta is not without its selection headaches but they are nothing compared to those of Sampdoria, which will be unable to field anyone who has scored more than three Italian Serie A goals. Manolo Gabbiadini left Sampdoria during the winter transfer window and the striker who has overtaken him as the side’s Italian Serie A top scorer, Eder, is banned after he received his latest yellow card versus Genoa. Also suspended are Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang and playmaker Roberto Soriano, both of whom collected critical cautions in last weekend’s 1-1 Italian Serie A derby draw with Genoa.

Defence is not Atalanta’s strong suit – its Italian Serie A goal difference of minus 14 speaks volumes – but Sampdoria may lack a cutting edge on Sunday and, while the Orobics do not score bags of goals, they have managed to hit the back of the net in each of their last eight home league matches.

Palermo’s Italian Serie A home form merits respect and it gets one’s third nod at odds of +125  with BetVictor to get the better of Empoli on Sunday, although one acknowledges that Coral‘s odds of -167  about the Eagles on the option known as draw no bet may be a slightly smarter play.

The Italian Serie A statistics are simple: Palermo has won seven, drawn four and lost one of its 12 home games, while Empoli has won one, drawn seven and lost three of its 12 away games. Only fourth-placed Lazio has beaten Palermo at home in Italian Serie A, while just bottom-of-the-ladder Parma has suffered a league loss to a visiting Empoli.

The more one thinks about the odds, the more one thinks that Palermo draw no bet is a pretty good bet at 1.60. Empoli did win the reverse Italian Serie A fixture 3-0, though.

With regards to Italian Serie A exotics, one is expecting a goalfest when Sassuolo and Lazio meet on Sunday. Sassuolo’s three-pronged attack of Domenico Berardi, Nicola Sansone and Simone Zaza should start but its defence is likely to have an unfamiliar look and it is not as though its best defence is one of Italian Serie A’s finest anyway. Over two and a half goals is available at odds of +110  with BetVictor and that stands out because one was expecting it to be odds on.
