Sassuolo struggled against Sampdoria without its star player and one is betting that it will come up short when its faces Fiorentina in the fourth round of Italian Serie A matches.
One was frustrated that Sampdoria could not convert any of its chances away to Sassuolo on Sunday because the home team was ripe for the picking without Domenico Berardi, one of Italian Serie A’s most influential players. Berardi scored 16 of Sassuolo’s 43 Italian Serie A goals last season and he had a hand in creating many more. Sassuolo would have been relegated if he had missed a lot of games – it hit the back of the net only four times in the five matches that he sat out and three of those goals came in a home game versus Catania, one of the teams to slide into Italian Serie B.
Fiorentina has kept a clean sheet in each of last three games across all competitions, beating Atalanta and Guincamp and drawing with Genoa, so the bet has to be the Viola to win their Italian Serie A match against Sassuolo to nil at odds of +162 with Paddy Power and Sky Bet. Fiorentina beat Sassuolo 1-0 on the road in last term’s Italian Serie A before falling victim to a 20-minute Berardi hat-trick on home soil, eventually going down by the odd goal in seven.
No Berardi – he is suspended for another two Italian Serie A games after being sent off versus Internazionale – should mean no Sassuolo so the odds of Fiorentina not conceding a goal and getting the job done are much more attractive than the lower ones available about a home win by any scoreline.
Torino is not scoring goals and that leaves it vulnerable away to a Cagliari side that will not be dull under Italian Serie A coaching legend Zdenek Zeman. BetVictor is offering odds of +170 about a Cagliari win and that is over the top.
Cagliari has scored in each of its three competitive games and Zeman, whose strategy throughout his managerial career has been to attack at all costs, is slowly putting his stamp on the team that he took over a few months ago. The visit of a Torino side that has forgotten how to rustle the onion bag provides Cagliari with a good chance of a first Italian Serie A victory under its hugely respected boss.
Torino’s lengthy unbeaten run is rapidly becoming a distant memory as it has lost its last two Italian Serie A matches and failed to score a goal in any of its last four games across all competitions. Torino’s last goal was 428 minutes of action ago and it was a penalty kick in its UEFA Europa League home match against Split after a 0-0 draw in Croatia. Thrill-seeking punters may wish to back Cagliari to win to nil at odds of +425 with BetVictor but that flies in the face of everything that one knows about Zeman-led teams.
Finally, Sampdoria has claims at odds of +100 with Coral to win its Italian Serie A game versus Chievo, which would be pointless had it not scored totally against the run of play and defeated Napoli 1-0 a week and a half ago. Napoli had 65 per cent possession and forced 15 corner kicks to two but it was Chievo that accrued three Italian Serie A points thanks to Maxi Lopez’s undeserved goal in the 49th minute. It was Chievo’s only attempt on target in the entire game.
Sampdoria defeated Chievo at home and away in last season’s Italian Serie A – 2-1 in Genoa and 1-0 in Verona and that was despite going down to 10 men with the scores tied at 0-0 on its own pitch – so the head-to-head form lines supports siding with Samp as well as the current league ladder.
