Burnley Can Cement Top Two Place on Tuesday Night

Burnley beat Rotherham 2-0 to move into 2nd in the league.

It was another successful weekend of tips in the Championship with 2 out of 3 winning bets, and we aim to continue the good work on Tuesday night. While all eyes will be on the epic tussle between Arsenal and Barcelona in the Champions League, there’s a full fixture list in the English second tier, and the competition is hotting up at the top and bottom of the division.

Burnley were the weekend’s biggest winners with their 2-0 victory over Rotherham taking them into second place and relegating Middlesbrough to 3rd. Neither Hull nor Boro had a game at the weekend, and both are back in action on Tuesday night along with Brighton, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday as the top six jostle for position. Burnley are our headline tip for the evening as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor, but for our other fancies we’re heading further down the league table and taking on a couple of relegation candidates who are in woeful form. Both Rotherham and Charlton are deep in trouble in the bottom three, but both are also in dire form and face tricky games at Reading and Preston respectively. Those two sides are in decent form, with Reading seeing off the challenge of West Brom in the FA Cup at the weekend and Preston on the back of three wins in a row.

Burnley v Nottingham Forest

First up it’s Burnley though, who continue to be offered at good prices despite their excellent home record. The  -110  on offer with Betfred stands out as one of the best bets of the night.

Burnley have moved up into 2nd in the table and automatic promotion back to the Premier League is well within their sights. It was a routine 2-0 home win over Rotherham on Saturday, and it could have been more with a little more clinical finishing. New Rotherham boss Neil Warnock set his side up to frustrate the Clarets, but Vokes and Arfield scored in each half to make it a comfortable three points. That’s 11 wins from 16 home games for Sean Dyche and his men, including five of the last six. Their only defeat in the last ten matches was away at Arsenal in the FA Cup, and that run has seen them get the better of Hull, Derby and Middlesbrough. They’re playing as well as anyone in the Championship right now and are fancied to come away with another home win.

Notts Forest had been on that superb unbeaten run which took in 13 games, but they came unstuck in their latest match, losing 2-0 at home to Huddersfield. Manager Dougie Freedman has done a brilliant job at the City Ground considering the financial restrictions and the transfer embargo at the club, but his squad is stretched to the maximum and this is as tough a fixture as the Championship can throw at them. They are unbeaten in six on the road but prior to that lost four straight games on their travels, and this one looks to be a step too far.

Preston v Charlton

Preston are also worth following on Tuesday night after a run of three games which has seen them rise to 10th in the table. The  -150  available with Bet365BetVictor and Paddy Power is plenty good enough about them beating lowly Charlton.

Preston are just eight points outside the play-off zone now, and their recent upturn in results will have some fans dreaming of promotion glory. In truth they’ve been a solid proposition all season, making themselves particularly hard-to-beat as their positive goal difference testifies. They’ve beaten Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and Huddersfield in the last trio of games, with a very decent 0-0 draw at Derby in the match before. They’ve won four of the last five on home soil, with the 3-1 defeat to Brentford the only slip up, but that was only their second loss at home since last September.

Charlton meanwhile are well and truly in the doldrums and face the very real prospect of plying their trade in League One next season. They’re rock bottom of the league with 25 points and sit six points adrift of safety. They were soundly beaten 3-0 by relegation candidates Fulham over the weekend and that ‘six-pointer’ will have done untold damage to confidence. The Addicks have now won just once in the last 15 matches, and away form is poor with 7 of the last 10 road games resulting in defeat. They’ve failed to even score a goal in the last three games and it’s hard to see where the inspiration is going to come from to lead the survival charge.

Preston are on a roll at present and can put Charlton to the sword on Tuesday night.

Reading v Rotherham

Reading will have been given a huge lift by their FA Cup win over West Brom and they can carry the feelgood factor into the match with Rotherham at a fair  -138  with SkybetCoral and Betfair

The Royals took the game to their Premier League opposition on Saturday and landed the spoils for our bet with a brilliant come-from-behind win. After a goalless first half Darren Fletcher’s strike for the Baggies looked to have tilted the tie in West Brom’s favour, but McShane and Hector put Reading 2-1 ahead before Piazon added a third in injury-time to put the icing on the cake. Although 16th in the league, they’re not completely out of the woods with 37 points and another three here would be very welcome as they look to secure Championship football and concentrate on the FA Cup quarter final against Crystal Palace.

Rotherham are trying to tighten up under experienced boss Neil Warnock, but he’s still waiting for his first win in charge, and it doesn’t look like coming this weekend. The Millers are five points from safety in 22nd position and it looks like a big challenge to stay in the Championship for another season. They’ve lost 8 of the last 10 on the road and Reading are an unforgiving side on home soil.
