Atleti to Shoot Down Eagles in Madrid

Galatasaray 0-2 Atletico

Benfica has had two tough assignments in the early stages of the Portuguese Primeira Liga and the UEFA Champions League and it has failed both of them, which is why one is betting against the Eagles getting anything out of Atletico Madrid when the Group C leaders lock horns in Spain on Wednesday.

At the risk of offending fans of the Portuguese Primeira Liga, it is an uncompetitive competition in which Benfica and the division’s other big guns, Porto and Sporting, do not get tested most weeks. What must be alarming for Benfica supporters is that the Eagles have come up short in each of their difficult matches this season, losing the Portuguese Supertaca Candido de Oliveira 0-1 to Sporting at a neutral venue and suffering a 0-1 defeat at Porto in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Moreover, Benfica lost 0-1 at Arouca in the Portuguese Primeira Liga so the Eagles have played three games outside its own stadium across all competitions for three 0-1 losses. And one would argue quite strongly that Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League Group C trip to Atletico Madrid is harder than anything that Benfica has faced yet.

A Portuguese Primeira Liga team was the last to inflict a UEFA Champions League home defeat on Atletico Madrid but that was Porto in December 2009 and the Mattressers have strung together nine wins and two draws since then, giving away a remarkably low two goals in those 11 games. Road victories are hard by which to come in the UEFA Champions League and one cannot see Benfica upsetting the odds on Wednesday. SkyBet is offering odds of -161 about Atletico Madrid making it two wins from two UEFA Champions League Group C rounds and one can see that price shortening.

One had the displeasure of watching Wolfsburg stuff up its German Bundesliga derby against Hannover on Saturday. The match statistics suggest that Wolfsburg bossed its Lower Saxony rival but Hannover had a couple of glorious chances to score before the Wolves went up 1-0, a lead that the Reds pulled back courtesy of Hiroshi Kiyotake’s terrific finish. On balance, 1-1 was a fair scoreline and Wolfsburg will have to improve 100 per cent if it is going to derive anything from its UEFA Champions League Group B game at new English Premier League leader Manchester United on Wednesday.

The jury is out considering its verdict on Manchester United but the Red Devils have worked their way to pole position in the English Premier League and their home results across all tournaments are five wins – four of them by at least two goals – and one goalless draw. Wolfsburg was poor versus a Hannover side that, in spite of what one saw first hand on Saturday, will be lucky to remain in the German Bundesliga.

Odds of -120 are available about Manchester United beating Wolfsburg at Old Trafford and getting its UEFA Champions League Group B campaign back on track.

Finally, another Wednesday match is interesting and it is the UEFA Champions League Group B clash between CSKA Moskva and PSV. The bet that one likes in the Arena Khimki game is both teams to score at odds of -130 . CSKA Moskva is top of the Russian Premier League after 10 rounds but it has struggled to keep clean sheets in any of its various competitions – the Army Men have played 16 matches and both sides have found the back of the net in 10 of them. PSV’s numbers are not dissimilar to those of CSKA Moskva – seven of its 10 games have seen both teams rustle the onion bag.

CSKA Moskva is the favourite for the UEFA Champions League Group B game in Russia and one would fancy it chance of breaching PSV’s defence at least once but it is hard to ignore the fact that the Army Men have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 10 UEFA Champions League home matches, conceding at least two goals in six of them.
