Betway sports hasn’t always been near the top of our list of sportsbooks, however, with a shift in management and ownership, things have changed a lot in the past two years for the better.
Despite being in their relative infancy as an online bookmaking firm, Betway have made some big strides and have outlaid plenty of money in order to get their name recognised. On top of sponsoring races at the Cheltenham festival, they are also now the official sponsor of West Ham United FC.
Licenced by the Malta Gaming Authority and the Gambling Commission in the UK, Betway offer a sportsbook, in-play betting, a casino, poker and more. In this review, we focus on the quality of the sportsbook, looking at everything from the design of the site to the quality of the odds.
The website is slick and well designed. The landing page features a large graphic of Real Madrid winning the Champions League, and there are several links to the different sections of the site beneath.
The sportsbook adopts a black, green and white theme which works well and although there are plenty of graphics and banners, it isn’t too clustered and customers can easily navigate to their desired market. The sports can be found on the left hand side of the page, with live matches and games and upcoming events in the centre. The bet slip sits on the right hand side of the page.
Betway sports have teamed up with Betradar to offer customers extensive statistics, which can help to assist punters when they are looking for potential bets. On top of the statistics section, the resource centre for horse racing betting is extensive. For each race, there is analysis and comment from Timeform, access to the NAPs from newspaper tipsters, hot horses and NagMe – a feature where users can be notified when their fancy is running.
The website can be viewed in English, Czech, Danish, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Russian and Greek.
Betway have a total of 28 different sports for customers to choose from. In addition to all of the core sports, there are also some more marginal disciplines such as esports, judo, pesapallo and beach volleyball.
There are odds for football matches from 42 different countries around the world and international and European competitions are also priced up. The depth of the UK action is impressive, with the English divisions going down as far as the 8th tier of action. Premier League matches typically have around 100-105 additional bet types on top of the 1X2 offerings, with handicaps, specials and total goals just three of the bet types customers can strike.
Ice hockey betting only comes from 6 countries which is slightly disappointing. The main focus is on the NHL, where there are usually around 20 additional bet types per match. At the time of review, Betway only had basketball matches from the USA, Finland, Peru and the Euro leagues. There was no betting on any of the Asian competitions.
As mentioned early, Betway have a fairly extensive horse racing section. There is coverage from the UK & Ireland, France, South Africa and there is also ante post betting.
They may have a fairly slick site and a strong marketing campaign, but one area where Betway need to improve is in their odds. The competitiveness of odds is calculated by looking at the total book percentages of each market. A book with no inbuilt profit margin would equate to 100% when all odds in said event were converted to percentages and added together. Therefore a figure as close to 100% is desirable.
English Premier League odds typically work to around 107-107.5%. This is poor. Firms such as Bet365 and BetVictor work closer to 103% and even Ladbrokes and Coral hover around 104.5-106%. The percentages stay roughly similar when dropping down a division to the English Championship. This is a curious decision from the odds compilers, as usually the lower leagues have much bigger profit margins.
Ice hockey matches in the NHL work to 107.5-108%, although games in European countries such as Russia are bigger, coming in at 111-112%. The NBA basketball ‘moneyline’ odds are a little more competitive, compiling to 104.5-105%.
Betway offer best odds guaranteed on their horse racing action from 10am daily. Therefore, if a customer takes the odds of a runner, and it starts at a bigger price and wins, then the bettor gets the enhanced odds (this concession is commonplace with most of the big firms nowadays). Two hours before a 6 runner race at Southwell, Betway’s book came to 111.6%, which is definitely reasonable. To compare, at the same time, Bet365’s odds worked to 110.7% and William Hill’s 114.1%.
There are other ad-hoc promotions and concessions such as the most recent horse racing offer: ‘place a bet on selected races, and if your horse finishes 2nd and is beaten by less than a length, we’ll refund losing bets with a free bet up to £25’
For customers residing in Canada, Betway sports offer a couple of sign-up bonus to the value of $200 so make sure you get signed up now while these offers are live.
The payment options available to customers depend on which country they reside. Some of the methods include Visa, Maestro, Paypal, Skrill and Ukash.
Betway have a comprehensive customer services department. Customers can call in on three numbers:
UK: 0808 238 9841
Rest of World: +44-808-238-9841
All 3 of the lines are manned 24/7. Alternatively, bettors can communicate with staff via live chat or through email (email@example.com).
Overall, Betway sports have some positive aspects to their service. Their website is solid, their list of sports is fine, football depth is good, and they have a customer services department who are easy to reach. From a negative perspective, their odds aren’t always the most competitive but the site continues to improve in service, reputation and quality.
