How Does the Indian Premier League Work?

The Indian Premier League is an annual T20 tournament that began in 2008. The biggest domestic cricket competition in the world typically takes place between March and May, lasting for two months.

Now that you know when the tournament takes place and where to place your bets, let’s discuss the exciting annual player auction and new format for IPL 2027.

IPL Auction

Before you bet on the IPL, it’s important to know which players will compete in each team. The annual player auction takes place approximately one month before the tournament begins. Squad rules affect the auction, as teams can only sign eight overseas players and a maximum of four can feature in the playing eleven. As a result, IPL teams compete in fierce bidding wars to sign the world’s best players.

The most expensive player in IPL history is Rishabh Pant. Lucknow Super Giants acquired him for ₹27 crore at the IPL 2025 mega-auction. He surpassed Shreyas Iyer, who went to Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore at the same auction.

The top IPL betting sites often provide odds on which team a player will join. If you follow the latest cricket news and know two teams are vying to sign a player, then you can check out the IPL auction betting odds and potentially profit from the player signing on the dotted line.

IPL 2027 Format

The Indian Premier League is a franchise-based tournament involving ten teams, each representing an Indian city. Since the addition of two new franchises in 2022 – Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans – the league has used a two-group format.

IPL 2027 retains the competition’s home and away format. The teams are divided into two groups of five, with each team playing their own group once and the teams in the other group twice. This means each team will play a maximum of 14 matches during the league stage.

At the end of the league stage, which comprises a total of 70 matches and provides plenty of IPL betting opportunities, the four teams with the most points qualify for the playoffs.

  • Qualifier 1 – The teams ranked first and second in the group stage.
  • Eliminator – The teams ranked third and fourth in the group stage.
  • Qualifier 2 – The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator.
  • IPL 2027 Final – The winners of Qualifiers 1 and 2.

IPL 2027 Teams – An Overview of All 10 Franchises

The 10 teams set to compete in IPL 2027 are Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Five other teams have competed in the IPL since its inception, but these franchises have since dissolved: Deccan Chargers, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Pune Warriors India, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Gujarat Lions.

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are five-time IPL winners (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023), making them the joint-most successful franchise in the competition alongside Mumbai Indians. CSK play their home matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where thousands of fans known as the ‘Yellow Army’ create a deafening atmosphere for visiting teams. Under the long-time leadership of Indian legend MS Dhoni, Chennai have reached the playoffs a record number of times and appeared in ten finals.

Dhoni handed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season, with Stephen Fleming continuing as head coach. After a disappointing 2025 campaign in which they finished bottom of the table, CSK underwent a significant squad overhaul for the seasons that followed.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals

Known as the Delhi Daredevils until they revealed their new identity in 2019, the Delhi Capitals (DC) remain one of the IPL’s nearly men, still chasing a maiden title. The Capitals reached the playoffs in 2019 for the first time in seven years before exceeding expectations by reaching the IPL Final in 2020, losing by five wickets to the Mumbai Indians which their only final appearance to date. They topped the league table in 2021 but fell in the qualifiers, then endured a lean spell, finishing ninth in 2023 before recovering to mid-table under new captain Axar Patel.

The franchise, owned by the GMR and JSW groups, has focused on rebuilding around youth. Axar Patel leads the side, with Hemang Badani as head coach, and the top order now centres on the likes of KL Rahul, who has been the team’s standout batter, alongside Kuldeep Yadav’s wicket-taking spin.

Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans

Ahmedabad-based Gujarat Titans (GT) made history by winning the IPL in their debut season in 2022. A total of 22 companies declared an interest in purchasing the rights to operate the franchise, with CVC Capital Partners, a private equity and investment advisory firm, posting the winning bid of Rs 5,625 crore. GT play their home matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world’s largest cricket stadium.

Having drafted Hardik Pandya as their captain ahead of the 2022 mega auction, the Titans reached a second successive final in 2023, losing to Chennai Super Kings, before Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians. Shubman Gill (the 2023 Orange Cap winner) took over the captaincy from 2024, and now leads the side alongside key players such as Rashid Khan. After missing the playoffs in 2024, GT bounced back to reach the Eliminator in 2025 and the final in 2026.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings

Formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) are owned by a consortium including Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, Karan Paul and Preity Zinta, a Bollywood star. These famous faces join thousands of fans at the team’s home ground in the Mohali/Mullanpur area, where Punjab supporters have experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows since the franchise’s founding in 2008.

Punjab finished third in the inaugural IPL season and reached the final in 2014, but then endured a long drought, failing to make the playoffs for a decade. That changed dramatically in 2025 when, under new captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, Punjab topped the league table and reached the final, only to lose narrowly to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite chasing a maiden title for 18 seasons, the Kings remain one of the competition’s most watchable sides, built around Iyer’s batting and Arshdeep Singh’s new-ball threat.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders

Owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have an enormous fan base. The three-time IPL champions play their home matches at Eden Gardens, one of the oldest and largest cricket stadiums in India. Following their first appearance in the playoffs in 2011, KKR became IPL champions in 2012 and won the title again in 2014, both under Gautam Gambhir.

A decade later, KKR added a third title in dominant fashion, topping the table and winning the 2024 final under captain Shreyas Iyer, with Gambhir back at the franchise as mentor. Iyer then departed for Punjab Kings, and veteran Ajinkya Rahane took over as captain from 2025. After a disappointing eighth-place defence of their crown in 2025, the Knight Riders will be looking to challenge again, still built around the all-round talents of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell alongside mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) joined the Gujarat Titans (GT) as the two new franchises in the 15th edition of the IPL in 2022. The Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG Group, who owned the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise between 2016 and 2017, won the rights to operate the Lucknow franchise with a bid of Rs 7,090 crore.

LSG play their home matches at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Captained by KL Rahul, they qualified for the playoffs in both their first two seasons (2022 and 2023) before missing out in 2024. Ahead of 2025, Rahul departed and LSG signed Rishabh Pant for a record Rs 27 crore, installing him as captain. However, after two disappointing campaigns without a playoff spot, Pant stepped down following the 2026 season, leaving the franchise’s leadership in transition.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians (MI) have been in the Indian Premier League since day one. Despite struggling in the early years, Mumbai became the most successful team in IPL history. The five-time champions (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) play their home matches at the Wankhede Stadium, and remain level with Chennai Super Kings for the most titles.

Ahead of the 2024 season, MI traded for Hardik Pandya and installed him as captain, ending Rohit Sharma’s decade-long, five-title reign, a move that divided the fanbase. Pandya’s first year in charge was a struggle, with Mumbai finishing bottom of the table in 2024, but he steadied the ship in 2025 as MI reached Qualifier 2. He continues to lead a star-studded squad still built around Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals

ounded in 2008 as one of the first IPL franchises, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) play their home matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The Royals won the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 under Shane Warne, defeating the Chennai Super Kings in a pulsating match that went down to the last ball.

RR reached the final again in 2022 under Sanju Samson, losing to Gujarat Titans, but have long been known for developing young talent, Jofra Archer, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag all broke through at the franchise. Ahead of 2026, the Royals traded long-serving captain Samson to Chennai Super Kings (receiving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in return) and handed the captaincy to 24-year-old Riyan Parag, working under new head coach Kumar Sangakkara. The squad’s spark now comes from Jaiswal at the top of the order and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Long known as the underachievers of the IPL, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) (formerly Royal Challengers Bangalore) finally shed that label in emphatic fashion. Playing their home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, RCB had finished runners-up three times (2009, 2011, 2016) and endured an 18-year wait before ending their title drought in 2025.

Under captain Rajat Patidar and head coach Andy Flower, RCB beat Punjab Kings in the 2025 final to win their maiden crown, vindicating the long faith of talisman Virat Kohli. They then went one better in 2026, topping the table and defeating Gujarat Titans in the final to become only the third franchise, after CSK and MI, to successfully defend the title. The side remains built around Kohli’s batting, with Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar spearheading the bowling attack.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) play at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in front of the ‘Orange Army’. The Sunrisers’ first appearance in the IPL came in 2013, and they won the title in 2016, reaching the playoffs regularly in the years that followed.

Ahead of 2024, SRH signed Australian captain Pat Cummins for a then-record fee and installed him as skipper, with Daniel Vettori as head coach. In his first season in charge, Cummins led an explosive batting line-up all the way to the final, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders, their first final appearance since 2018. After a disappointing sixth-place finish in 2025, SRH bounced back to third in 2026, powered by a fearsome top order featuring Heinrich Klaasen, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head.

Bet on Indian Premier League Award Winners

Besides betting on specific fixtures, which teams will reach the playoffs and the winning team, you can also bet on IPL award winners. Organisers present awards to standout players during the post-match presentation ceremony that takes place following the IPL final.

With so many great cricketers competing in the IPL, you can lock in great odds before the tournament begins. IPL betting odds for award winners swing as the tournament progresses, with star performers cementing their positions at the top of leaderboards and becoming hot favourites to win an award.

The top IPL betting sites accept bets on the winners of the following awards:

Orange Cap

Orange Cap

Organisers present the Orange Cap to the batsman who scores the most runs during an IPL season. It’s worn by the batsman with the most runs while fielding during the tournament. This fuels their hunger to score even more runs, as they don’t want a fellow batsman getting the honour of wearing it.

Virat Kohli won the Orange Cap award in 2016, scoring a record 973 runs in 16 matches. KL Rahul hit 670 runs in 14 matches in 2020, while Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 635 runs in 16 matches to win the Orange Cap in 2021 and Jos Buttler hit 863 runs in 17 matches during IPL 2022.

Purple Cap

Purple Cap

The Purple Cap is awarded to the bowler who takes the most wickets during an IPL season. The bowler who tops the wicket leaderboard wears the Purple Cap while fielding, meaning the cap can exchange hands many times during the season. If two or more bowlers take the same number of wickets, the bowler with the best economy rate receives the Purple Cap.

Dwayne Brave holds the record for most wickets in an IPL season, taking 32 in 18 matches in 2013. South African Kagiso Rabada came close to matching this record with 30 wickets in 2020, while RCB’s Harshal Patel equalled the record in 2021.

Maximum Sixes Award

Maximum Sixes Award

As the title suggests, organisers present this prestigious award to the batsman who hits the most sixes in the IPL season. Jamaican Chris Gayle holds four of the top five positions in the record books, with his most impressive performance being 59 sixes in 15 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012.

KKR’s Andre Russell is second on the list with 52 sixes in 14 matches, but he has been injury-prone in recent seasons. Mumbai’s Ishan Kishan won the award in 2020, hitting 30 sixes in 13 matches. KL Rahul smashed 30 sixes to win the award in 2021, while Jos Buttler notched 45 in 16 matches in 2022.

Most Valuable Player

Most Valuable Player

Known as the ‘Man of the Tournament’ award until the 2012 season, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is presented to the season’s best performer. Rather than leave this decision in the hands of commentators or fans, the IPL introduced a points system for a fair result. A dot ball is worth 1 point; a catch, stumping, or four is worth 2.5 points; and every wicket or six is worth 3.5 points.

Andre Russell and Shane Watson have both won the prestigious award twice. Jofra Archer won the award for IPL 2020 with 305 points. Harshal Patel scooped the award with 264.5 points in 2021, while Jos Buttler was crowned MVP in IPL 2022.

Emerging Player of the Year

Emerging Player of the Year

The best Indian Premier League betting sites also accept bets on the Emerging Player of the Year. The IPL has renamed this award several times, with previous titles including “Best Under-23 Player” and “Rising Star of the Year”.

Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman became the only non-Indian to win this award in 2016, so we suggest sticking to promising Indian players if you bet on this IPL award. Devdutt Padikkal won the 2020 award after scoring 473 runs in 15 matches in his debut season. CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad won the award in 2021, with his 635 runs helping the Super Kings claim their fourth IPL title, and Umran Malik scooped the award in 2022.
