Ravens, Patriots, Chiefs To Record Opening-Day Victories

September 7, 2018

The 2018 NFL season began in earnest as the Philadelphia Eagles saw off the Atlanta Falcons in almost a carbon copy of their playoff win in the last campaign, holding the Falcons on the goalline to get off the mark.

The rest of the league will have been watching with baited breath, waiting to take their respective turns to return to the field. We’ll now break down the five teams that you should have in your teaser for the first round of full matches on Sunday.

Flacco can lead the Ravens to victory

Buffalo Bills @ Baltimore Ravens

The Bills could have the worst team in the NFL. Nathan Peterman was named their starting quarterback for the 2018 season ahead of rookie Josh Allen. Peterman endured a nightmare game in his first start of his career last term, throwing five interceptions against the Los Angeles Chargers. Baltimore has the defense to give him fits, boasting a solid pass-rush and a talented secondary. The Bills will be relying on the form of LeSean McCoy to bail them out of a difficult situation on the road.

However, the Ravens have had a formidable run defense for a long time and it should be no different in the campaign with Brandon Williams in the middle of the line. Joe Flacco has his faults, but has been put under pressure by the arrival of Lamar Jackson. He should put enough points on the board to defeat Buffalo in an expected comfortable victory for the home side at M&T Bank Stadium. Take them in your teaser and as a best priced single bet at -330  with BetOnline.

Houston Texans @ New England Patriots

The Patriots return to action for the first time since their defeat in Super Bowl LII. Tom Brady continues to defy father time and at the age of 41 will face off against Houston’s vaunted defensive line. JJ Watt makes his comeback from injury after missing the majority of the last two campaigns with a litany of fitness problems. Whitney Mercilus also returns to the fold, having joined Watt on the sideline. The duo along with Jadeveon Clowney, Benardrick McKinney will be aiming to slow down Brady, who will be without a lot of his trusted targets.

Julian Edelman is suspended, while Danny Amendola and Dion Lewis left the club in the off-season. Deshaun Watson had a good game against the Patriots last season, throwing two touchdowns. On his comeback from a torn ACL, he will look to go one better than last term when he almost outduelled Brady. However, the Brady – Rob Gronkowski connection remains the most deadly in the NFL. Back the Patriots to get off the mark in your teaser and at a single bet with -260  Bovada.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Los Angeles Chargers

The Chiefs enter a new era with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. Kansas City made the decision to move on from Alex Smith, trading the veteran to the Washington Redskins. Mahomes has flashed his talent at times, but now needs to prove it on a consistent basis for the club, starting with a tough divisional match. Kansas City underachieved last season after a bright start to the campaign. Andy Reid’s men were dumped out of the post-season in the Wildcard Round. The head coach will be under pressure to start the new term with a victory.

The Chargers are not known for their good starts to the season. It took four matches for them to record a victory in 2017. Anthony Lynn’s men have an impressive defense, led by the outstanding defensive end Joey Bosa, although he will miss the opener with a foot injury. Philip Rivers is capable of carving up the Chiefs on his day with Keenan Allen in his receiving corps. Due to the time it takes Los Angeles to get going, take the Chiefs in your teaser and on a single bet at odds of +162  with BetOnline.

Tennessee Titans @ Miami Dolphins

The Titans have a new head coach with Mike Vrabel taking the reins for the 2018 campaign. Mike Mularkey was fired, despite guiding Tennessee to their first playoff appearance since 2008. The Titans were hammered by the Patriots, although they had punched above their weight to reach the Divisional Round in the first place. Vrabel raided the Patriots to sign Malcolm Butler and Lewis to bolster the defense and offense respectively. Marcus Mariota underwhelmed at quarterback last season and will be under pressure to bounce back. He has enough weapons to expose the Dolphins on the road.

Miami welcome back quarterback Ryan Tannehill from injury as he missed the last campaign after suffering a torn ACL. However, the 30-year-old will have his work cut out given a lack of targets in his offense, while the running game is not blessed with talent. The Dolphins will be looking for their defense to rise to the challenge even after losing Ndamukong Suh. Tennessee are the better team on paper and they should have enough to see off the Dolphins at odds of -120  with BetOnline.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ New York Giants

The Jaguars put together an outstanding campaign in 2017 to reach the AFC Championship. However, Jacksonville were undone by the brilliance of Brady in the fourth quarter to miss out on a place in the Super Bowl. Doug Marrone’s men now carry the weight of expectation into the new season and it could result in a step back. Blake Bortles remains at the quarterback position for the Jags, which could expose his team despite the talent of their team on defense.

New York have a new head coach as Pat Shurmur takes control of his first game. He had a successful stint as offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings and will now attempt to improve the fortunes of Eli Manning. The 37-year-old has struggled in the past two seasons, but with Shurmur and the return of Odell Beckham Jr along with the addition of Saquon Barkley, the Giants could enjoy a resurgence in the NFC East. Barkley will be desperate to make an impact on his first start in the NFL against one of the elite defenses in the league. Take the Giants for value at +125  with Bovada.
