NFL Week 11 Teaser of the Week
NFL Teaser — This Week, We Make “Big Bucs” Without Having to Pay the Bills
This time around we are going to try a three-team, 10-point NFL teaser, which means that we are going to take ten points to our benefit in three different games. And we had better be right too, because we have to lay a price. To play the three-teamer at Top Bet getting ten points, you have to lay 6/5, or -120.
Let’s make our plays:
First of all, I don’t care about their 1-8 record; I like the spirit of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lately. They haven’t thrown in the towel, and they got that winless monkey off their backs with a win against Miami on Monday. Meanwhile, you really have to wonder whether the Atlanta Falcons have packed it in; they are out of the playoff hunt and teams that are used to going to the post-season, as the Falcons have been under Mike Smith, tend to lose a lot of focus when they know they can’t get there. Atlanta has certainly had its share of injuries, not the least of which is the loss of Julio Jones for the season. That took away a significant weapon for Matt Ryan to stretch defenses with.
And even the wounded players who have come back haven’t exactly blown the doors off anybody. Steven Jackson has averaged just 3.1 yards a carry. Roddy White is not somebody who keeps defensive coordinators up at night. Oh yes, we are fully aware that the Bucs lost Mike James in that Monday night game, and he was the backup to Doug Martin. But you might be pleasantly surprised by what you see out of Bobby Rainey. People who follow college football remember what a terrific back he was at Western Kentucky, and he might just be in the right atmosphere in Tampa. NFL bettors got a taste of it on Monday night, when he scored the winning touchdown. It may not be much of a handicap to have him in the lineup.
We keep in mind also that Tampa Bay has suffered five of its eight losses by eight points or less (the eight-pointer to Atlanta) and that tensions may have eased a bit with Greg Schiano after getting over the winless “hump.” With Top Bet making the Falcons a one-point favorite in its pro football betting odds, we’re going to shift that upward and make it BUCS +11 as part of our NFL teaser.
In last week’s teaser we went with the Buffalo Bills and they failed us. We’re not mad, but we want to be on the other side of that proposition this week. When the New York Jets come to Orchard Park for this AFC East matchup, we see that it is a duel between rookie quarterbacks, through “duel” may not turn out to be the proper word for it. Between Geno Smith and EJ Manuel I might give the slight edge to Smith, if only because he’s had more playing time, and it’s been interrupted. Manuel came back from an injury last week and threw for 155 yards on 39 attempts.
NFL football bettors should not question whether Manuel is capable of better; surely he is. But the Jets’ defense is very legitimate. They have the ability to shut down an opponent’s running game, or at least slow it down. And that is one thing Manuel is going to have to get some support from if he is to lead a winning effort. The Bills are a one-point home favorite, as posted in the NFL odds at Top Bet. To me, the question isn’t whether the Bills can win by more than eleven points; it’s whether they can SCORE much more than eleven points. And I say that recognizing that the Jets’ pattern has been to follow a strong effort (like the one they had vs. the Saints) with a lousy one. Perhaps the bye week will help to cure that. We go with the JETS +11.
We are not going to argue with anybody that the Carolina Panthers are not “for real.” That 10-9 win at San Francisco, which was a red-hot side, should take care of that notion. Carolina can play defense with the best of them; after all, the Panthers did hold the Niners to 151 yards and sacked Colin Kaepernick six times. And of course, we know Cam Newton is dangerous. However, after blowing out some distressed teams, NFL bettors got a glimpse of how things shook out when Carolina played a top-shelf team; i.e., it was very tight.
The New England Patriots come to Charlotte after a bye week, which means Bill Belichick and his staff had an extra week to prepare. The Pats will force the pace with their no-huddle approach, giving the Panthers something different to look at. What Belichick will do is try to prevent Ron Rivera from rotating his defensive tackles in and out of the game. And Tom Brady offers a different dimension than the Panthers have seen lately in the passing game, as he will have Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski on hand. In the football betting lines at Top Bet, Carolina is currently a 2.5-point favorite. For purposes of the NFL teaser, we are all too happy to grab something extra with a team that could win the game outright. So it’s PATRIOTS +12.5 for us.
To recap, this is what the three-team, ten-point teaser looks like:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +11
New York Jets +11
New England Patriots +12.5
