Eagles To Take Control Of NFC East With Redskins Win

Wentz has driven the Eagles forward

The Philadelphia Eagles will be aiming to take control of the NFC East when they face off against the Washington Redskins.

The Eagles moved to 5-1 in their campaign with an impressive victory on the road against the Carolina Panthers.  Carson Wentz has developed into one of the leading quarterbacks in the NFL.
He threw three touchdowns to guide his side past the Panthers, should Wentz maintain his form Doug Pederson’s men have a good chance of making a deep surge into the playoffs.

Philadelphia’s defense was also on point, helping them take control of the NFC East by limiting Cam Newton’s ability to throw downfield.

The Redskins have been inconsistent this term, which is prove by their 3-2 record. Jay Gruden’s men were not at their best last time out against the San Francisco 49ers.

They needed a defensive stand late in the game and a beneficial penalty call to see out the win. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has been impressive thus far into the term, but needs the support of a running game to ease the burden.

The contest is vital for both teams in the battle in the NFC East. The Eagles defeated the Redskins on the opening day of the season on the road thanks to a controversial late call on Fletcher Cox’s touchdown.

Philadelphia can move to 3-0 in the division, which would put them in a dominant position at 6-1. Washington have back-to-back divisional matches and two victories on the bounce could spark their season into life.

We’ll now break down both sides and look at the match using the latest betting odds.

Philadelphia Eagles

Wentz has driven the Eagles forward

The Eagles have been one of the season’s surprise packages, winning five of their opening six fixtures. Philadelphia enjoyed a strong start to the last campaign, but petered out to a 7-9 record.
Wentz hit the rookie wall in his first campaign in the NFL, fading down the stretch. However, this term he has shown impressive signs of progression, taking his game to the next level.

The 23-year-old has already thrown for 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Wentz’s displays have guided the Eagles to narrow victories over the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers and the Panthers.

Wentz has been excellent, although he has also had contributions from his receiving corps. Philadelphia had issues with their wideouts last season, but this year Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor and Zach Ertz have provided threats down the field.

The running game has also been strong, with LeGarrette Blount easing the pressure on the quarterback. The back has rushed for 390 yards and one touchdown, providing a good foil for Wentz’s passing game.

Defensively, the Eagles have battled well in the secondary, despite their lack of talent. Jalen Mills and Rasul Douglas have been solid in their duties after being pressed into action following Ronald Darby’s injury.

The pass-rush has helped their cause, with Philadelphia’s defensive line creating a great deal of pressure up front. Brandon Graham leads the club with four sacks, but Chris Long, Vinny Curry, Timmy Jernigan and Cox have all been in and around opposing quarterbacks this term. Maintaining that form will be crucial until Darby returns to provide security in the secondary.

Washington Redskins

Cousins has been impressive this term

The Redskins have been a confusing team to watch this season. At times they have played brilliant football, but they’ve also played their fair share of poor play. Their 3-2 record suggests that they’re an inconsistent outfit, heading towards a mediocre season.

This match is vital for turning them into contenders in the NFC East as a victory will have them on the path towards a challenge for the playoffs. Cousins’ statistics were impressive and have been throughout the term. He has made some outstanding throws in the club’s five matches, but has also made a couple of costly mistakes.

The 29-year-old put enough points on the board to secure the win over the 49ers, throwing two touchdowns although he also had an interception to his name. On his day Cousins can dissect a secondary almost single-handed, and his rapport with Jordan Reed and Chris Thompson has continued this term. Should he connect with Terrelle Pryor and Josh Doctson in the same way, the Redskins could boast a formidable passing game.

The running game has taken a hit due to the absence of Rob Kelley. The 25-year-old has been effective during his time on the pitch, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, but rib and injuries have limited him to just three matches. With Kelley in the backfield to take the pressure off Cousins, Washington will not be the one dimensional unit they have been in the past.

The Redskins’ defense flows through the performances of Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith. Both players have been a force on the edge and have allowed Matthew Ioannidis to break out.
Given Jonathan Allen’s season-ending injury, he could be an important player for the rest of the term.

Betting Options

The Eagles have been in fine form and have the talent on both sides of the ball to cause the Redskins problems again. Their match in the opening week of the season was a close contest and Cousins had chance to win the game on the final drive, only for Cox to produce strip sack and touchdown to secure the Eagles’ win.

The call was controversial as it looked to be an incomplete pass, but the officials held up their ruling on the field. Washington can attack Philadelphia’s weaknesses in the secondary with their talented receiving corps. However, their offensive line has to give Cousins time to throw deep.

Should they do that the Redskins have a chance to win the game, but if the Eagles’ defensive line gets on top the home side should claim the victory. Wentz is on a roll and it’s hard to bet against him and his in-form side at the moment.

Therefore back Pederson’s men at odds of -213   with BetOnline, while take the -7.5 spread for the Eagles win by more than a touchdown at +130   with Betway.
