The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is the richest flat race on turf anywhere in the world, worth €5,000,000 in total, with €2,850,000 going to the winner. It is run over 2,400 metres at ParisLongchamp on the first Sunday of October, and it is open to thoroughbreds aged three and above.

First run in 1920, the Arc has become the de facto world championship for middle-distance horses. Where the Derby tests three-year-olds against each other and the Breeders’ Cup Turf runs on a tighter American track, the Arc throws the best three-year-olds in Europe against the best older horses, over the classic distance, usually on ground that has started to turn. Winning it is the single hardest thing to do in European flat racing.

The full title is the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, reflecting the sponsorship deal in place since 2008 with the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club — the same deal that lifted the prize fund to its current level and made the race the richest in Europe. The name covers the whole two-day festival at ParisLongchamp, not just the feature race, which is a common source of confusion.

Daryz. Last year’s winner has come back a better horse. Now four, he returned in the spring to win the Prix Ganay by three and a half lengths and followed up in the Prix Aga Khan IV, both at ParisLongchamp. He knows the track, he has the tactical speed that the Arc’s short straight demands, and he carries the Aga Khan Studs silks that have now won this race a record eight times. The obvious knock is the one that applies to every defending champion: he is unlikely to be a value price.

Minnie Hauk. Beaten a head. Aidan O’Brien’s dual Oaks winner made her move first in 2025 and was collared on the line by a horse who had the benefit of tracking her, which is the kind of defeat that says more about the ride than the horse. She is entered again, and if she gets a more patient trip she is very much the one they all have to beat.

Sosie. André Fabre’s colt was third last year and is back for another go. Fabre has trained eight Arc winners, more than anyone, and has a long history of getting horses to peak on this specific afternoon.

The Japanese challenge. Seven Japanese-trained horses have been entered, headed by Forever Young. Japan has been trying to win this race for decades and has come agonisingly close more than once. This is the deepest team they have sent.
