England To Record T20 Win Over New Zealand

February 12, 2018

England face a must-win contest against New Zealand in their T20 clash to keep their hopes of reaching the Tri-Series Final alive.

The Three Lions suffered their second defeat on the bounce to Australia in the shortest format of the game, leaving them in danger of elimination in their contest with the Kiwis.

Eoin Morgan missed his side’s loss to the Baggy Greens in the second of their matches with a groin injury. Jos Buttler led the team, but they were soundly beaten by the Aussies, suffering a seven-wicket defeat after posting only 137 runs in their innings.

New Zealand have also suffered a defeat at the hands of the Aussies and cannot afford to have another setback against England. The Kiwis will be determined to set the tone for their upcoming matches against England in their Test and ODI series.

Kane Williamson’s men were far from their best in the opening match of the series, losing by seven wickets after scoring 117 runs from their 20 overs. They had no answer for the bowling of Andrew Tye and will be aiming to respond against Morgan’s men.

We’ll now break down the contest, using the latest betting odds.

England’s Top Batsman

Hales needs to perform at the top

Alex Hales was considered an outside pick for the Ashes squad during the last English summer, but was left out of the touring party. The 29-year-old has not thrived down under in the limited format of the game. He has notched just one half-century, which came against Australia in Brisbane during the ODI series.

Hales’ struggles have continued into the T20s, being removed for 22 in the opener and just three last time out in Melbourne. England have been renowned for their fast starts in the shortened format. However, Hales and Roy’s problems at the top of the innings have prevented them for massing big totals thus far in the 20-over series.

England will need one of their openers to kickstart the innings sooner or later. Another defeat will see them miss out on the final. Hales and company will be determined to build form ahead of the ODIs in New Zealand and the two T20 contests offer an opportunity to find their rhythm against the Kiwis’ potent attack.

The 29-year-old could come under pressure due to his struggles over the winter should the production line of talent continue during the English summer. Therefore he needs runs to kickstart a strong end to the touring term. Back him at odds of 7/2  with BetVictor to top score for England.

New Zealand’s Top Batsman

The Kiwis were rocked by Australia’s bowling attack in their opener at the SCG. Tye and Billy Stanlake ripped through their batting line-up, leaving them to post a miserable total of 117 from their 20 overs. Williamson will be determined to lead the response from his team to get them back on course for the final. The New Zealand captain was dismissed for just eight runs off 21 deliveries, wasting valuable time at the crease.

Williamson faces an important two months in his time as skipper. He will be looked at to lead the Kiwis to similar success against England as Australia’s Steve Smith enjoyed during the Ashes. The 27-year-old will aim to get the better of Joe Root as his Aussie counterpart did in the series. To do that, he will need to find his form and striking ability to put the England bowlers to the sword.

The Kiwis’ skipper cannot afford another lacklustre performance batting at the crucial spot in the order. Expect him to bounce back on home soil with a fluent knock, with odds of 7/2  with 888Sport to top score for New Zealand. Williamson is battling a back injury that could force him out. Should that be the case Martin Guptill is always a solid bet at the top at 3/1 .

England’s Top Bowler

The Three Lions have not had great contributions from their bowling attack to start the T20 series. They claimed five wickets in the opening match against Australia and just three in their defeat at Melbourne. It’s surprising as England were able to pin down the Aussies during the ODIs, with much of the same attack.

Due to his success in the ODI series, Australia respected the leg-spin of Adil Rashid. The 29-year-old was able to put the Aussies on the back foot in the middle overs. However, he has not enjoyed the same potency in the 20-over format, taking just one wicket in the two matches.

New Zealand may opt to take him on, backing their ability to strike out of the ground. Therefore there may be more opportunities for the Yorkshireman to strike. Back him to lead the wicket column at odds of 3/1  with BetVictor.

New Zealand’s Top Bowler

Boult needs to fire for NZ

Despite his side’s issues in their defeat to Australia in the opening match of the series, Trent Boult maintained his high standards. The left-arm bowler took two wickets for just 14 runs in his three overs, removing David Warner and Chris Lynn. However, he lacked the support needed to apply pressure on the Aussies to make it a close contest.

Boult is one of the world’s leading bowlers and will be keen to put England under his spell. The 28-year-old has not played a great deal of matches against the Three Lions. He does not have the best record against Morgan’s men, averaging 31.37 and taking just three wickets in ODIs.

Boult’s three T20 matches have been even worse, being dispatched for 100 in his 10 overs taking just three wickets. He will be keen to atone for his poor performances, starting with a strong outing at Wellington. Back him to lead the way for the Kiwis at odds of 11/4  with 888Sport.

England have been off the pace in their opening two matches of the series. The change in scenery from Australia to New Zealand could be the tonic to revive their fortunes. There should be pace in the pitch and the opportunity for high-scoring after their underwhelming start. Even without the presence of Morgan, the Three Lions should be able to shine at odds of 17/20  with Betway.
