What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a video game from Epic Games which averages more than 1 million players at a time and has become one of the biggest esports on the planet.

Here, we’ll delve into the history of Fortnite and explain why it’s such an important game to so many players.

History

The initial concept for Fortnite came in 2011, shortly after the team had completed work on Gears of War 3. Back then, it was just a fresh concept that came off the back of a game jam. The first Fortnite game, titled Fortnite Save the World, was first released in 2017 after six years of development.

Within the same year, Epic also released Fortnite Battle Royale. This would prove to be a masterstroke, and is the game most people refer to when they talk about Fortnite in general. It’s gone on to become the basis for FNCS betting and other top-tier tournaments.

Mechanics

Fortnite esports betting usually revolves around the traditional Battle Royale mode. This is where 100 players enter a map and aim to kill each other, with only one player or team left standing.

The concept of a Battle Royale predates Fortnite. In fact, it was the popularity of PUBG: Battlegrounds from PUBG Studios that initially led to Epic expanding with a Battle Royale version of the game in the first place.

During the game, players can gather resources, kill other players, hide away, and build structures to improve their chances of survival. The standard version is every player for themselves (solo), but there are also Duos, Trios and Squads modes.

What Makes Fortnite Esports Betting Unique?

Fortnite may not have invented the Battle Royale format, but it has mastered it. And, with so many professional players and even more fans, there’s not much that matches Fortnite esports betting.

There’s no single aspect that makes Fortnite special, as it certainly shares characteristics of Apex Legends and other esports games. Instead, it’s a combination of features, Fortnite prop bets, celebrity endorsements and more that make the game one-of-a-kind.

Here’s what makes Fortnite unique:

Format: Solos, Duos, Trios and Squads

The flexibility of Fortnite’s Battle Royale differentiates it from traditional team death matches, like the ones you’ll see in CS:GO. While there’s nothing wrong with using the same format repeatedly, it does risk becoming stale.

By contrast, Fortnite tournament formats can take on any of four formats:

  • Solos: A 100-man Battle Royale where it’s every man/woman/Klombo for themselves.
  • Duos: Every player is placed into a pair, meaning 50 groups of two.
  • Trios: Like Duos, but with teams of three instead of two. To keep the numbers fair, this mode has 99 players instead of 100. It was initially introduced as a limited-time mode, but has stuck around.
  • Squads: 25 teams of four compete in a 100-player Battle Royale. The Squads Victory Cash Cup is one way to bet on Squads, having debuted in 2025.

Scoring Structure

Fortnite Battle Royale is a survival game, which means you get more points the longer you survive. But you also build up points from eliminating other players. This discourages camping, and helps create a more exciting game for viewers.

Here’s how you can score points in Fortnite:

  • Extra Points. Although it’s not transparently quantifiable, you’ll also sometimes earn points for giving out damage (even if you don’t kill the player), taking less damage, and staying in key zones throughout the match. In tournaments, extra points can also be awarded for tasks such as capturing towers and islands.
  • Eliminations.  You earn points for every player you kill, with increased points if you eliminate someone who has a higher rank than you.
  • Placement. The longer you survive, the more points you earn, with the last person standing getting the lion’s share. It’s that simple.

Stacked Matches

These are elite Fortnite games at the highest level, like those you’ll find on FNCS betting sites. In these games, you’ll often see a lot of players move into the final phase of the game, where small, moving storm circles force players out of hiding.

Any player who doesn’t move in time will get zapped by The Storm, reducing their HP and killing them entirely if they don’t escape.

Open Access

Fortnite is a free-to-play game that you can access on your PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, Mac, iOS or Android device. In theory, any player can level up and ultimately compete at the level of Fortnite esports betting.

That said, it’s not easy. While most Fortnite esports tournaments don’t have an invite system, you will need to meet certain criteria. For example, the $1 Million Unreal Cup required you to have played a minimum of 14 tournaments in the past six months. And you’ll need to meet certain ranking requirements, too.

Understanding Fortnite Tournament Formats

Most of the time when you bet on Fortnite tournaments, it’ll be in the Battle Royale format. This is especially true for the biggest, most prestigious events.

Here’s how some of the most famous and popular Fortnite tournaments work:

FNCS Global Championships

Also known as the Fortnite Global Championship, or just ‘Globals’ to frequent players, this is the largest Fortnite tournament around. After launching in 2023 it has become an annual event, dipping in and out between a Duos and Trios format.

Like most top-level Fortnite competitions, it uses a 100-man Battle Royale format (changed to 99 in 2025 for the Trios version). To qualify, players need to rank in one of the three FNCS tournaments that take place earlier in the year.

The top 25 teams from 49 in the Upper Bracket advance to the Grand Final, with the other 24 facing off against Last Chance Major qualifiers for their spot. Prize pools typically range from $2 million to $4 million, which leads to a lot of interest and plenty of FNCS betting action.

Cash Cups

In many cash cups,  you get a fixed fee for winning a round. For example, the Fortnite Cash Cup runs every week directly from Epic Games. There are two rounds, each lasting about three hours. The players who rack up the most points will finish higher on the leaderboard. You get one point per kill.

You have to be quite well-ranked to get in – usually Gold I and above. But it’s worth the effort, as you’ll usually receive $100 per win in Round 2. Or $200 if you’re playing as a Duo.

Other Fortnite Events

There are multiple other tournaments at Fortnite betting sites, with the biggest one being the Fortnite World Cup Finals. The 2019 solo version ranks in the top-10 biggest-ever esports prize pools, awarding a massive $15.2 million to the top-ranked players.

Invitational tournaments

Here’s an at-a-glance breakdown of how these Fortnite tournament formats compare:

TournamentTypical number of playersScoring rulesNumber of roundsPrize pool
FNCS Global Championships50-145Placement, eliminations, tower capture, island capture12$2-4 million
Cash Cups10,000+Placement, eliminations2$100 per round win

The Most Popular Fortnite Betting Markets Explained

All Fortnite betting sites will offer markets on the outright winner and match winner for the biggest events, like FNCS betting. But the best ones also include Fortnite prop bets and niche markets – as well as providing direct Fortnite live streams for free.

Here are the main Fortnite esports betting markets:

Outrights

If you’re new to Fortnite betting odds, you can keep things simple with an outright. For example, betting on Clix to win the 2026 FNCS Global Championships.

This is a simple bet where you don’t need to overthink the meta game or finer details. You simply pick the player or team you think will win overall and place your bet.

Map/Round Winner

You can also bet on a player or team to win an individual round. This can be especially lucrative if you predict an upset.

One smart way to get information for a round winner bet on Fortnite is to follow players’ streams and socials. If you spot that a player is sleep-deprived or off their game for any reason, it might be a good time to bet against them.

Total Eliminations (Over/Under)

This is a fun way to bet on Fortnite, keeping you on the edge of your seat and being liable to change at any moment.

Rather than predict the winner, you simply bet on how many eliminations they’ll make. The bookmaker will set the number based on their own information, and you can then bet on whether the player will get more or fewer eliminations. For example, betting on under/over eight eliminations.

How to Place a Fortnite Bet

It’s a bit daunting using Fortnite betting sites for the first time, but it’s more or less the same as betting on any other sport.

Here’s a step-by-step guide showing you how to bet on Fortnite:

Step 1

Choose a site.

We’ve listed the top sites that currently offer Fortnite betting odds in this guide.

Step 2

Create an account.

Sign up and remember to grab your welcome bonus.

Step 3

Go to ‘Esports’.

From there, you can see if there are any upcoming Fortnite events.

Step 4

Explore the markets.

Some sites just stick to outright winners, while others have Fortnite prop bets and more. For example, which player will cause the highest amount of damage.

Step 5

Research.

Before you place a bet, check the latest Fortnite news to see if there’s anything that could impact your bet.

Step 6

Place your bets.

Choose your market, add it to your bet slip, input your stake, and confirm the bet.

Step 6

Cash out.

If you win, your money will immediately become available for you to withdraw or use for other bets.

Risk and Reward in Fortnite Betting

When you bet on Fortnite tournaments, you’re invariably betting on a high-risk, high-reward market. This is due to the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the game.

For example, if you bet on a football team to win the league at the start of a season, you have around nine months for the best team to rise to the top. They’ll suffer some shock losses, but still have enough time to finish first as long as they perform fairly consistently.

In a 100-man Battle Royale, anybody can be eliminated in a split second. Outcomes such as item placement, targeting by rival groups, and the movements of The Storm can all have a major impact on who wins and who dies early.

In short, it’s very tough to predict who will win any round of Fortnite.

But that’s why the rewards are so lucrative. Even when you’re betting on the best player in the game, you’re still going to get quite decent odds.

Placement Points reward you for surviving, and Elimination Points reward you for killing other players. That means the highest-scoring players will always be the more aggressive ones.
