What Is the Dubai World Cup?

The Dubai World Cup has become one of the premier horse racing contests in the world today. Held annually since 1996, the race takes place at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The Dubai World Cup always takes place on the final Saturday of March.

Dubai World Cup Night features nine races. The Dubai World Cup itself is the last race of the evening.

The race is run over 2,000 metres and is open to Northern Hemisphere Thoroughbreds four years of age or older, as well as Southern Hemisphere Thoroughbreds three years and up.

The Dubai World Cup features a massive $12 million purse, making it one of the richest horse races in the world.

While Dubai World Cup betting has become extremely popular around the world, nobody who attends the race can bet on it. That’s because of the strict anti-gambling laws in the United Arab Emirates, which prohibit the typical rage of betting options you may be used to seeing at the racetrack.

2023 Dubai World Cup Betting Odds, Tips & Predictions

The eyes of the racing world turn to Meydan Racecourse on 25 March, as the prestigious Dubai World Cup brings the curtain down on Dubai World Cup night.

Historically, horses trained in the United Arab Emirates and the United States have dominated the Dubai World Cup. According to the latest Dubai World Cup betting odds, we should expect more of the same this year, but contenders from Japan and Australia are aiming to defy the odds.

Favourites and well-known horses have historically done well here, but longshots have sometimes shaken up the Dubai World Cup betting markets. In fact, the two biggest upsets came in back-to-back years. Both Victoire Pisa in 2011 and Monterosso in 2012 went off at 20/1 before winning the race.

2022 Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammer, who was beaten three-quarters of a length in second place in last month’s Saudi Cup, and Algiers, who bids for Dubai World Cup glory following back-to-back victories at Meydan, have been installed as 3.50Bet €100 to win €3505/2Bet £100 to win £350+250Bet $100 to win $3502.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$3502.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp350-0.4000Bet RM100 to win RM350 joint-favourites.

Japan has won the Dubai World Cup only once in 2011, and most horse racing tipsters expect Country Grammer and Algiers to be too classy for Panthalassa at Meydan. We’re backing Country Grammer to win a second Dubai World Cup on the trot and give Bob Baffert his third win in the race.

SBO Prediction: Country Grammer to win (5/2 at bet365)

Horses racing during Dubai World Cup

Dubai World Cup Records

With 25 years of racing in the books, the Dubai World Cup now boasts several notable records. Legendary horses, jockeys and trainers have set marks that future competitors will dream of eclipsing.

Below, we’ve collected some of the most important records in Dubai World Cup history. From the fastest times to the most successful jockeys and trainers, here are the biggest names in the history of this prestigious race.

Fastest Time

Fastest Time

Because the Dubai World Cup has been held on multiple tracks and surfaces over its history, there are multiple horses that can lay claim to this record. The fastest overall time still belongs to Dubai Millennium, who set the mark of 1:59.50 back in 2000 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.

After the race moved to Meydan Racecourse, the Dubai World Cup was initially held on a synthetic track. During that time, African Story placed the best mark, running the race in 2:01.61 in 2014. After the course switched to a dirt track, Thunder Snow set a new top time of 2:01.38 in 2018.

Biggest Winning Margin

Biggest Winning Margin

2009 Dubai World Cup betting suggested a duel between favourites Asiatic Boy (3.00) and Casino Drive (5.00). Instead, it was Well Armed (11.00) who dominated the field. The gelding won the race by a stunning 14 lengths, crushing the field in the final race held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.

Most Successful Jockey

Most Successful Jockey

The most successful jockey in Dubai World Cup history is the legendary Jerry Bailey, who won the race four times. Bailey is regarded as one of the greatest jockeys in horse racing history. He also won six Triple Crown races and 15 Breeders’ Cup contests, including five Breeders’ Cup Classics.

Bailey won the inaugural Dubai World Cup on Cigar in 1996, then followed it up the next year by riding Singspiel to victory. He would then later score back-to-back wins again on Captain Steve (2001) and Street Cry (2002). Italian jockey Frankie Dettori has also been quite successful in Dubai, winning the World Cup three times.

Most Successful Trainer

Most Successful Trainer

In terms of successful trainers at the Dubai World Cup, nobody can compete with the accomplishments of Saeed bin Suroor. The Dubai-based trainer has won the race nine times, starting with Almutawakel in 1999, and most recently with Thunder Snow, who won back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019.

That puts him far ahead of runner-up Bob Baffert, who has three Dubai World Cup wins to his credit.

History of the Dubai World Cup

The Dubai World Cup was the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who wanted to secure the long-term development of horse racing in UAE. In the first race in 1996, 11 world class racehorses competed for a total purse of $4 million, with Breeders’ Cup Classic champion Cigar ultimately winning that inaugural race.

Initially, the Dubai World Cup was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. That arrangement remained in place through 2009. The Emirates Racing Authority moved the face to the brand new Meydan Racecourse in 2010.

The Meydan track used a special all-weather surface called Tapeta for its first five races. However, the track proved expensive to maintain, and some American competitors disliked the surface. That led organizers to change the track back to a traditional dirt surface beginning in 2015.

No horse had won the Dubai World Cup twice, but that changed in 2019, when Thunder Snow backed up its title to become the first two-time winner. Thunder Snow wasn’t an overwhelming favourite in either race: he paid out at 11.20 odds for his first win, and 5.10 for his second.

Since 2019, the Dubai World Cup has offered a purse of $12 million to its field. That has once again established it as the highest paying horse race in the world, a title it temporarily had lost to the Pegasus World Cup in 2017 and 2018.
