England Women the Value in World Cup Quarters

EngWomen

The FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada has been a resounding success, with plenty of goals, action, upsets and drama. The competition is now at a vital stage as eight teams go into this weekend’s quarter finals, fighting for four semi-final spots.

England Women recorded their first ever win in the knockout stage of a tournament when they came from behind to beat Norway 2-1, setting up a quarter-final against hosts Canada. Australia Women went one better than the men have ever achieved, scoring the country’s first ever tournament knockout win with a shock 1-0 victory over Brazil Women. USA Women got through comfortably, beating Colombia Women 2-0, while Germany and France Women made short work of Sweden and South Korea Women respectively. The line up is completed by China Women, whoe beat New Zealand Women 1-0, and Japan Women who saw off Netherlands Women 2-1.

Quarter Final Schedule

If you’ve been following this tournament, you’ll know that many of the kick off times have been late at night, and the quarter-finals are no exception. Here’s the full draw with BST kick off times:

Remember to place your bets the night before for the games that start just after midnight. We’ve got a tip for each of the four quarter-finals, and we’re starting with France Women who look a little too big at the odds against Germany Women.

France Women or Draw Double Chance –  -120  with Bet365

We tipped France Women and England Women for World Cup glory prior to the tournament, and both are still in with a chance of making the semi-finals. France Women face by far their toughest test to date when they take on the current competition favourites, Germany.

France finished ahead of England in the group stage, after beating the Lionesses 1-0 in the opening game. They went down to a shock 2-0 defeat to Colombia Women in the next game, before thrashing Mexico Women 5-0 in the final group match. They were paired with South Korea in the second round, and coasted to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Germany were also top of their group, ahead of Norway, after easy 10-0 and 4-0 wins over Ivory Coast and Thailand, and a 1-1 draw with the Norwegians. They beat a good Sweden side 4-1 in the second round, and will be aiming to go all the way in the competition.

However, two of the last three meetings between the sides have been drawn, with France winning the most recent game in October 2014, 2-0. On paper Germany probably have the better squad, but the French are technically a very good team, and they look overpriced here. Odds of close to evens on the France Women double chance are worth taking.

USA Women –  -225  with Bet365Betvictor and Skybet

USA Women have been overtaken by Germany at the top of the betting, but still remain second-favourites to lift the trophy. They topped their group with 7 points after beating Australia 3-1 and Nigeria 1-0, but were held to a 0-0 draw by Sweden Women. Talisman Amy Wambach missed a penalty in the second round against Colombia, but the USA still went on to win 2-0, and they have to be fancied to beat China Women.

The Chinese came second in group A behind Canada, despite losing 1-0 to the hosts in the opening game. They went on to record a 1-0 win over Netherlands Women and a 2-2 draw with New Zealand Women, before getting the better of Cameroon 1-0 in the second round.

USA Women have won 10 of the last 11 meetings, and although China held them to a 1-1 friendly draw last December, we can only see one result here.

Japan Women –  +110  with 888SportUnibet and Paddy Power

Japan Women are the current World Cup holders, and they’ve slipped under the radar somewhat on their way to the quarter-finals. There have been no eye-catching 10-0 wins like the Germans, but Japan have won all four games at the tournament so far, and are worth backing to continue the good work against Australia.

Japan Women beat Cameroon, Switzerland and Ecuador by a single goal each on their way to a second round match with Netherlands Women, which was also won by just the one goal as they ran out 2-1 winners.

Australia Women reached the knockout stage by finishing second in USA’s group, beating Nigeria and drawing with Sweden after going down 3-1 to USA. The Matildas made history by beating Brazil Women in the second round, but they rode their luck a little in that match.

Japan Women have won 8 of the last 10 matches, and should be too good for Australia here, who can still go home with their heads held high after a great tournament.

England Women –  +250  with 888SportUnibet and Betvictor

England Women have won three in a row after the opening 1-0 defeat to France, and there is a feelgood factor about the squad as it prepares to take on the home nation in Vancouver on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Canada topped group A with 5 points after beating China and drawing with New Zealand and Netherlands. They went on to beat Switzerland 1-0 in the second round, and if there is a feelgood factor about the England squad, it is amplified in the Canadian squad due to the huge local support they continue to receive.

England beat Mexico and Colombia 2-1 in the group before defeating Norway Women by the same scoreline in the second round. That was a great result against a very good Norway side, and with England ranked two places higher than Canada in the world standings, it’s hard to see why they are such a big price here.

The England Women will have to be careful to play the game rather than the occasion, but if they can silence the crowd, they are worth a punt to spoil the party for the hosts.
