What is Bandy?

Bandy is a winter ice sport that is played with a ball, either indoors or outdoors. It has similarities to many other sports that developed alongside it, which can be seen in its rules and manner of play.

History

While it’s unclear exactly when are where bandy was first played, it’s generally agreed that it grew out of ice sports that were played for hundreds of years prior to becoming formalized as a single game. The first set of organized rules for bandy were published in 1882 in England, taking many rules from association football, since that was the dominant team sport of the time.

The 20th century saw the sport grow into an international game. Sweden and Russia have been where bandy is most popular, but it is now played in 20+ countries in Europe, Asia, North America and beyond.

Rules

Bandy is played on a large, rectangular sheet of ice called a bandy field that is approximately the same size as a football field. Two teams of 11 players attempt to get a round bandy ball into the opposing goal by skating and using bandy sticks. Most games last 90 minutes, with two 45-minute halves. While the game has some similarities with ice hockey, there is less physical contact than in that sport.

Scoring

Bandy tends to be higher scoring than association football, and perhaps slightly higher scoring than ice hockey, though that is due to the longer matches. An average match between competitive teams results in anywhere from 5 to 10 goals scored between the teams. As in football, goals cannot be scored from goal throws, but all other strokes can result in a score.

The sport we’ve generally been describing here is also sometimes referred to as “field bandy” to differentiate it from “rink bandy.” Rink bandy is a version of the sport played on a surface the size of an ice hockey rink with six players per side. Most other rules are the same in both versions of the game.

How We Select the Best Bandy Betting Sites

You may know your rink-bandy from your classic 11-a-side bandy, but finding the right place to bet on the sport can still feel like skating into unfamiliar territory. Bandy may not attract the same global attention as football or tennis, but dedicated fans know just how fast, tactical and exciting the action can be.

At SBO.net, we take the time to review the bandy betting markets offered by online bookmakers so that you do not have to. From Swedish Elitserien clashes to international tournaments, we look for betting sites that give bandy fans fair odds, useful markets and a smooth betting experience from the first whistle to the final goal.

Here are three key features we consider when reviewing the best bandy betting sites:

Number of Betting Markets

Bandy Betting Markets

The best bandy betting sites offer more than basic match-winner odds. We look for bookmakers that cover a wide range of markets, including totals, handicaps, correct score, team goals and outright tournament betting. The more options available, the easier it is for punters to find value before the match begins.

Live Streaming

Live Bandy Betting

Bandy is a fast-moving sport where momentum can change in an instant. A quick goal, a penalty or a spell of pressure can completely alter the shape of a match. That’s why we favour sites with reliable in-play betting, allowing you to react to the action as it unfolds and take advantage of changing odds.

Betting Odds

Competitive Bandy Odds

There is no point betting on bandy if you are accepting poor value. We compare odds across leading bookmakers to make sure our recommended sites offer competitive prices on domestic leagues, international fixtures and major tournaments. Better odds mean better potential returns, and that is always worth skating after.

Bandy odds are available on major competitions, and bettors can make many of the same wagers as they do on other team sports. While bandy betting sites differ on the variety and depth of the markets offered, the following are all regularly seen for matches in top domestic leagues and international play and will be familiar to many bettors.

Match winner

A match winner bet is straightforward, asking you to simply pick which side you believe will win a given match. The odds are set based on the perceived strength of each side, with the favourite returning less than the underdog.

For instance, you may see an international match in which Sweden is the 1/2 favourite over Russia, with the Russians listed at 9/5 in return. In league play, matches may end in a draw; in this case, you may see both “draw no bet” markets, where your stake is returned in the case of a draw, or three-way markets, in which a draw is also a valid bet.

Total goals

The total goals market asks you to predict the combined number of goals that will bet scored in a match by both teams. The bookmaker will present you with a total number, such as 7.5 goals, and you can take either Over or Under side of that number. As a result, these wagers are also casually referred to as Over/Under bets. In this example, the Over would hit if at least eight goals are scored, while the Under would require seven goals or less.

Bandy odds for total goals are set based on the offensive and defensive strengths of both teams, with weather conditions sometimes playing a part in outdoor matches as well. Typically, both sides will have similar odds of nearly even money, such as 10/11 or 5/6.

Asian handicap

Asian handicap betting is similar to spread betting and applies a handicap to allow for approximately equal chances on both sides of the market. For example, you may see an international match with Sweden listed as a -1.5-goal favourite over Finland. If you bet on Sweden, they must win by at least two goals for your bet to win; however, a bet on Finland will win if they win, draw, or lose by a single goal.

Asian handicap betting can be expressed with a handicap of full goals, half goals, or quarter goals, with the rules for resolving each as follows:

  • Quarter Goals: Occasionally, you may see a quarter-goal line, such as Sweden -0.75. This means your bet will be split evenly between the two adjacent handicaps. In this case, you’d have half a bet on Sweden -1, and half on Sweden -0.5. Should Sweden win by exactly a goal, half your bet (-0.5) would win, while the other half (-1) would push, with that portion of your stake returned.
  • Full Goals: If a team is a 1-goal favourite and wins by one goal, then the bet is a push and all stakes are returned to bettors.
  • Half Goals: If a team is favoured by a half goal (such as 0.5 or 1.5), no pushes are possible, and all bets will resolve.

Other markets

While the above are the most common markets seen at bandy betting sites, there are a few other ways to bet on bandy that punters should be aware off. Other common markets include:

  • Outright Winner: This is a bet on which team will win an overall competition, such as the Bandy World Championship or Sweden’s Elitserien. You can wager at any time, with the odds on each squad changing as results occur and the form of each side becomes clearer.
  • Goal Scorer: This bet allows you to wager on a specific player to score a goal. Simply choose the player you expect to score, and if they do so in the match in question, you’ll win.
  • Double Chance: This is a variation on a match winner bet available in matches where a draw is a possibility. In this case, you can bet on two of the three outcomes at a reduced payout: either a win for one side and a draw (known as 1X or X2), or on either side to come away with a win (12).

While bandy may not be at the Olympics, there are some very popular competitions that take place each winter. Here’s a look at three of the biggest competitions you’ll see listed at bandy betting sites.

Bandy World Championship

The Bandy World Championship has been contested by men since 1957, with a Women’s Bandy World Championship having been held since 2004. A varying number of teams may play in two separate levels (Division A and Division B), with a record 20 teams in total participating in the 2019 men’s competition.

Historically, the men’s competition has been dominated by Sweden (15 championships) and Russia (26 championships, including those won by the Soviet Union), with Finland being the only other team to win a single gold medal. Women’s play has been even more one-sided, with Sweden winning 13 of the 14 gold medals (Russia taking the only other one), and only five total nations having ever reached the medal podium.

Scheduling for the Bandy World Championship can vary, with the event typically taking place between January and March. Teams begin in pool play after which a knockout stage is held to determine the medal winners.

Russian Bandy League

The Russian Bandy Super League is a professional league that makes up the top division of Russian bandy. Each winter, 14 clubs typically compete for the national championship, though financial considerations can sometimes cause this number to vary slightly and impact the promotion and relegation from the second-tier Supreme League.

The regular season runs from November to February, with each team playing twice against each other. The top eight clubs then advance to a knockout stage, where teams play best-of-three rounds until the final, which is a single match played on neutral ice in March. In addition, there is cup play held during other times of the year, with the Russian Cup taking place in August and September, while the Super Cup is held in October.

The most dominant team in Russian bandy has been Dynamo Moscow, which boasts 24 titles from 1936 to today. Other successful clubs include Yenisey Krasnoyarsk (16 titles) and SKA-Sverdlovsk (12).

Swedish Bandy League

Known as the Elitserien (Elite League), this is the highest division of bandy in Sweden and is considered one of the most important domestic competitions in the world. As in Russia, 14 teams play a double-round robin during the season for a 26-game schedule, after which eight teams make a playoff round to determine the champion. The bottom four teams must play against the top two from the second-tier Allsvenskan to determine promotion and relegation each season.

The Elitserien schedule usually begins in October and runs though early February. It is then followed by the playoff stage, which runs for over a month into late March. The winner of the playoff is considered the Swedish champion for that season.

Vasteras SK has been the most successful Swedish bandy club historically, claiming 21 titles. In recent years, however, Villa Lidkoping BK won five straight championships from 2021-2025, before Sandvikens AIK was able to dethrone them in 2026.

Bandy matches are often surprisingly high scoring, especially when compared to football. This is because the pace of play is more like ice hockey, with the ball moving quickly from one end to another. Add in that bandy matches are 90 minutes compared to 60 for ice hockey, and the many goals – especially in lopsided matches – becomes easier to understand.

How to Place a Bet on Bandy

Step 1

Join a bandy betting site

Pick one of our recommended bookmakers, open your free account, and make a first deposit at the cashier in order to prepare for making your first bet.

Step 2

Research your potential wagers

If you’d like to place a bet on a match in the Bandy World Championships, be sure to look at the current form of each national side. For instance, you might look forward to a match between Sweden and Finland and see that the Finns have played their Swedish opponents relatively closely in recent competitions.

Step 3

Find the bandy section at the online bookmaker

Under bandy, you’ll see the Bandy World Championships, after which you can find the Sweden/Finland match you are interested in.

Step 4

Choose your bet and your stake

In this case, we notice that Finland is +2.5 goals on the Asian handicap market. We believe Finland will perform better than this, so we take Finland to cover that handicap. In this example, let’s imagine we’re being offered even money odds, and we wager £20 on the Finns.

Step 5

Watch the match

After we confirm our wager, we can sit down and root on Finland to win – or at least to keep the match close enough so that our bet wins!

Step 6

Collect our payout

In a thrilling match, Sweden holds on to beat Finland by a final score of 4-3. Because Finland lost by less than 2.5 goals, our bet is a winner! The bandy betting site pays us £40, which includes our original £20 stake and our £20 in winnings.

FAQs

What makes a good bandy betting site?

The best bandy betting sites are reputable, trusted bookmakers with a track record of fair operations. They offer a wide range of bandy odds on numerous competitions, along with competitive odds and valuable promotions. We’ve highlighted some of the best places to bet on bandy above on this page.

What is handicap betting in bandy?

Handicap betting allows you to wager on either side of a match with similar odds. The weaker team is given a handicap in goals, such as 1.5. The favourite must win by more than the handicap in order to win the wager, while the underdog may win, draw, or lose by fewer goals than the handicap.

Which bandy leagues can you bet on online?

Bandy betting sites offer wagering on some of the larger domestic leagues, though coverage can vary between bookmakers. The two most common leagues to bet on are the Russian Super League and Sweden’s Elitserien, with Finland’s Bandyliiga also available at some sites.
Q.

Is bandy similar to ice hockey?

A.
Bandy has some similarities to ice hockey, in that it is played by players skating on ice attempting to score goals. However, many of the rules are more similar to association football. Bandy also has similarities to field hockey and floorball, among other sports.
Q.

Which countries dominate international bandy?

A.
While international bandy has become more popular internationally, there’s no doubt about the top national teams. Russia and Sweden have been by far the most successful nations, nearly completely dominating men’s play, while Sweden has a stranglehold on the Women’s Bandy World Championship.
