Van Wilder to lampoon the opposition

6.45 Wolverhampton – Van Wilder

Twice raced, and out of the in-form Richard Fahey, Van Wilder is the first of the evening’s selections. This Rip Van Winkle colt caught the eye on debut over 7f and duly obliged on second start when dropped back in trip to 6f. Horse bucked a negative trend when winning, as trainer has a truly abysmal record with second time out 3 year olds. Strong at the end of the race that day and looked like he would improve with racing.

There isn’t much strength in depth, with Rennie Mackintosh seeming the main danger on paper. Mark Johnston’s filly sprung a surprise when a +2500  winner at Southwell last time out. Drops in trip today in very different conditions, and trainer has a moderate record when bringing his runners back in trip. Binky Blue and Clever Love are likely to put the pace to the race and Van Wilder should be finishing strongly. +150  with BetVictor and PaddyPower looks fair.

7.45 Wolverhampton – Woodbridge

Plenty of pace on in this handicap, with For Shia And Lua, Available, Rouge Nuage and our selection Woodbridge. Again a Richard Fahey inmate, this Exceed And Excel gelding was chinned at -10000  on first run over course and distance in November. Made up for that by grinding out a victory last time out, leading from the top of the straight and holding all comers at bay. Has received a negligible rise in the weights for that victory and could be better coming from just off the pace, and there should be plenty on. Trainer has a very good record with last time out all-weather winners in class 5/6 and he also does well with his runners turned out within 1-4 weeks. Is a competitive little race, but stall 5 is perfect over 7f and is available at +250  with Ladbrokes.
