12.10 Southwell – Peace Lilly
Peace Lilly might have been beaten 8 lengths into second last time out at Southwell, but that race was won by a very well handicapped horse and was over the distance of 7 furlongs. Up in trip today and with a less talented field of competitors, Peace Lilly should be able to justify favouritism for the Michael Appleby yard.
Peace Lilly is a daughter of Distorted Humor, an American bred horse, and it is unsurprising that she went well on her first start on the fibresand. She might be 0/8 but the form of her run last time out was solid for the grade and in this amateur contest, it always pays to have Serena Brotherton on your side. The experienced jockey often rides her rivals to sleep in these contests, and has ridden around Southwell many times.
Running over 7 furlongs last time out, Peace Lily was in rear early and was outpaced by a strong trip over the intermediate distance. She consented to run on once the bird had flown, and snatched second late in the day, with her run style very much suggesting that a step up in trip would yield improvement. Likely to be able to lay up a bit handier today (something which is often important at Southwell), and at odds of +188 , she rates a good bet.
3.10 Southwell – Spowarticus
Spowarticus is a likeable performer and a consistent one on the all-weather and he could very well have a fruitful winter on the artificial surface. Scott Dixon’s 6 year old gelding has won or been placed in 9 of his 14 all-weather starts, and his front running style is effective on Southwell’s slow surface where it can be difficult to peg back those prominent racers.
Last time out at Lingfield, Spowarticus went off an unfancied 17.0 shot but ran with real credit, eventually finishing second after being mown down late in the day. His long odds were probably on the back of two sub-par efforts, but those runs were on turf (where the horse if far less effective) and he is a different animal back on the all-weather.
From stall 11 Spowarticus is going to have to utilise his early pace to cross across and bag the advantage but without too much competition for the lead, he should be able to dictate things and at odds of +300 , looks a decent bet.
