Spanish Squeeze to Scoot Home at Chelmsford
4.35 Chelmsford – Kenstone
Kenstone recorded a hat trick of seconds before finishing 5th under unfavourable conditions last time out. David Dennis’ 2 year old Kendargent colt is proven on the all-weather and this race looks fairly weak, so assuming a clear run, he has to go very close to winning, and at odds of 4.50, the juvenile represents very solid each-way value.
After not cutting much ice in his first 3 starts in maiden company, Kenstone started life in Nursery company off a mark of 59, enabling him to compete in Class 6 company. Showed much more on his fourth start at Kempton, finishing 2nd of 12 over 6 furlongs, indicating that there his official rating was very workable. Followed up that run over today’s 6 furlong trip at Chelmsford, denied by the narrowest of margins – a nose. Next time out was stepped up in trip to 7 furlongs and went off favourite, but didn’t seem to get home. Was kept at 7 furlongs for his next run at Leicester on testing ground, and again, unsurprisingly wasn’t the strongest at the finish. Connections have been wise and dropped him back in trip, and returned him to the all-weather.
Wilson’s Ruby is the market leader and Brian Ellison brings his 2 year old down from North Yorkshire. Raced over 5 furlongs last time out and finished strongly suggesting that the step up in trip should suit. Is up 3lbs from last time out though and faces a consistent rival in Kenstone who is likely to sit prominently from stall 9.
6.15 Chelmsford – Spanish Squeeze
Hugo Palmer’s Spanish Squeeze created a big impression on his second start and subsequently went off favourite on his 3rd start in Listed company at Lingfield back in the Spring. He returns to this Class 2 handicap with a great chance to resume his progression and rates a strong favourite at odds of 3.50.
The son of Lope De Vega showed clear promise on debut last September on debut at Newmarket, finishing 3rd. Duly followed that up with a win over 1 mile at Kempton and then went off favourite for a valuable race at Lingfield. That tight track proved to be too much and Palmer’s runner came under pressure before sticking on late in the day when the race was over. Returns over 10 furlongs which is likely to be the perfect trip based on his running style last time out and pedigree. Martin Harley takes the ride and the horse has a nice racing weight of 8 stone 13lbs.
Lovely Memory is the second favourite for Godolphin and has promising apprentice Edward Greatrex taking off a valuable 5lbs. Has looked solid without being special though and maybe lacks the scope of the selection.
