Haughmond to Hero at Haydock

May 22, 2015

2.30 Haydock – Haughmond

An intriguing 6f 2year old maiden is the second race on the card at Haydock, and Haughmond looks a very solid each way bet to make the frame, and could well be capable of scoring. As the only runner in the field with previous experience, he could have an edge over some well-bred rivals.

It goes without saying, but Karl Burke 2nd time out 2 year olds really need respecting. His record is second to none – 53/260 (20.38%) for a £132.43 LSP, giving an A/E of 1.66. The son of Kheleyf proved difficult to load on debut but then ran an eye catching race over 5f on quicker ground. There is stamina in the dam’s side of the pedigree and the step up to 6f and slightly softer ground should really suit.

Hibou is by Street Cry, a sire who is 24/151 (15.89%) with his newcomers for a £17.42 LSP and an A/E of 1.48. With that record and such powerful connections, it is no surprise he has been installed as market leader. Regardless, Karl Burke’s runner is ‘proven’ as such on the racecourse, and several pounds improvement can be expected second time out.

3.05 Haydock – Hope And Faith

Hope And Faith was a strong favourite on market debut and duly justified her market position, with an eye taking success at Doncaster. The form of that maiden has stood up, with the second placed horse recording an RPR of 86 next time out. It appears that an opening mark of 80 could have underestimated Jeremy Noseda’s daughter of Zebedee.

Jamie Spencer retains the ride and he got the perfect run through at Doncaster. The horse showed a willing attitude and quickened away before tiring a little before the line. In a field of more experienced runners, punters could be forgiven for thinking the fact the filly has just the solitary run could be a negative, but she generally showed a professional attitude and again races on a flat, galloping course.

Favourite Ghalib has to be respected, especially after his demolition job last time out, but at half the odds, he doesn’t represent much value.
