Charlies Mate to Be Punters Friend at Chelmsford

November 12, 2015

12th-november

1.50 Southwell – Rita’s Boy

Rita’s Boy was impressive last time out and the 3 year old son of Captain Rio has sound claims of following up for the shrewd Karl Burke stable. A previous winner on the fibresand, the horse’s hike in the weights has been offset by promising 7lb claimer Clifford Lee.

Rita’s Boy is an out and out sprinter. He won a Class 4 race last time out by making all at Nottingham and that early pace counts for a lot at Southwell, where it is difficult to make up ground from off the speed. Had a solid spring and is twice a course and distance winner so he has plenty going for him. From stall 10 is likely to blast out and try to burn off his rivals. Clifford Lee knows what he is doing and although the race is wide open on paper, he has a great chance. Sire does very well on the fibresand surface and the horse seems to prefer artificial conditions.

Even Stevens is a classy operator on his day and although he has been tumbling in the weights on the turf, Scott Dixon’s 7 year old returns to his beloved all-weather. Is also a pacey runner and could be very well handicapped on his old form.

6.55 Chelmsford – Charlies Mate

John Best’s 4 year old Myboycharlie gelding Charlie’s Mate has been on a steep upwards curve, and he has a fantastic chance of making it a hat trick under top female rider Cathy Gannon.

Charlie’s Mate is clearly a versatile animal, having won over 12 furlongs at Kempton back in August. He has since handled the drop in trip to 8 furlongs admirably, and has shown plenty of pace at the trip, racing keenly. Won at Chelmsford over a mile off a mark of 62, and followed that up next time out off a mark of 67 at Kempton. Has been raised 7lbs but is likely to sit midfield and granted an even pace, he should go very close again.

Lord Reason could be the chief threat to the selection. John Ryan’s 3 year old has gone off favourite in his last two runs, indicating that he has been working well at home. Has yet to replicate that on the racecourse, but would be no surprise if the money came again.
