Clarets to Pick off Cherries in Premier League Finale

May 11, 2018

Burnley have already qualified for the Europa League.

Bookmakers have underrated Burnley throughout the English Premier League season and, even though the Clarets have qualified for the UEFA Europa League, odds compilers are still being disrespectful to the seventh-ranked side.

Burnley won the English Premier League race within a race, finishing the highest placed team excluding the big six of Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. Burnley’s phenomenal success in the English Premier League has been built upon its ability to get the better of the division’s lesser lights – the Clarets are 13-8-4 in their 25 matches against lower-ranked sides compared to 1-4-7 in their 12 games versus the teams on higher rungs of the ladder. And Burnley beat its Sunday guest, Bournemouth, 2-1 in the reverse English Premier League fixture that took place in late November.

While Burnley has not shone against the English Premier League’s heavyweights, its results have been better versus those sides than those of Bournemouth. According to one’s English Premier League collateral form analysis, Burnley enjoys a 9-5-5 edge over Bournemouth, including progressive counts of 4-0-0 and 7-3-2. Burnley should be a shade of odds-on to complete an English Premier League double over Bournemouth but the Clarets are nice odds of 2.25  with BetVictor.

You could argue that Bournemouth has a bit more for which to play than Burnley because the Cherries could end the English Premier League competition anywhere from 10th to 15th on the ladder and every rung carries different prizes, whereas the Clarets are locked in seventh. But those are not sufficient reasons for Burnley to be trading at greater than evens.

Some punters will back Arsenal to send out Arsene Wenger as a winner but the Gunners are too short and, remember, Alex Ferguson’s final English Premier League match in charge of Manchester United ended in a 5-5 draw at West Bromwich. Better bets than Arsenal on Sunday may be the Manchester teams – City versus Southampton and United against Watford.

Victory for Manchester City at odds of 1.44  with Betway over Southampton would take the Citizens to 100 English Premier League points, having hit more than 100 goals in their championship campaign. That milestone will be a motivating factor for Manchester City, its English Premier League collateral form advantage over Southampton is 18-0-1 and, barring a flogging, the Saints should be safe from relegation to the second tier. For the record, Everton is the only English Premier League side versus which Southampton has outperformed Manchester City.

Manchester United is not celebrating second place in the English Premier League but the Red Devils have the English FA Cup final on their agenda and Jose Mourinho will tell the Old Trafford team’s players that their Wembley Stadium spots will be on the line when they tackle Watford on Sunday.

That should be enough to see then finish the season in style with a comfortable win at Old Trafford at 1.4  with Betway.
