Comedy Favourites Are No Laughing Matter For Bookies

Julia Louis Dreyfus has won four Emmys for her role in Veep.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will stage its 68th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday 18th September and there is a couple of favourites who represent superb value even though they are trading at a shade of odds on.

When it comes to predicting the recipients of Hollywood’s major prizes there is no website that has been in the game longer than Gold Derby. Launched in 2000, Gold Derby houses the opinions of editors and experts who, more often than not, call the big races correctly. One has been betting on entertainment awards since the turn of the century and one thing that happens all the time is that bookmakers go up with unnecessarily generous odds about some favourites.

There are 20 editors/experts who have posted their 68th Primetime Emmy Awards predictions on Gold Derby. Eighteen of them think that Jeffrey Tambor will win the gong for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while 19 of them are tipping that Julia Louis-Dreyfus will take out the actress equivalent.

Both Tambor and Louis-Dreyfus are defending Primetime Emmy Awards champions. Tambor won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards for his performances in Transparent as Maura Pfefferman, a retired college professor of political science who opens up to her family about always identifying as a woman. Dreyfus, who become a global star through her portrayal of Elaine Benes on Seinfield, has received the Primetime Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for four years in a row for playing Selina Meyer in Veep. Meyer is a former American senator who ascends from being the vice president to the president.

William Hill is offering odds of -137  about Tambor winning Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards and the same bookmaker is also quoting -137   about Louis-Dreyfus picking up Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Based on the prognostications of the Gold Derby analysts, Tambor has every right to be trading at odds around the -500  mark and Louis-Dreyfus at a lower price.

Several bookmakers are betting on seven of the biggest 68th Primetime Emmy Awards and, if Gold Derby’s editors/experts are on the money, The People v OJ Simpson, Veep, Game of Thrones and Robin Wright are worthy category favourites.

The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards favourite whom the Gold Derby group think is most vulnerable is Kevin Spacey, with its view being that Rami Malek is the value alternative. Malek is available at odds of +250  with William Hill to win Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work in Mr Robot.

Eleven of Gold Derby’s 20 editors/experts are in Malek’s camp regarding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards. Mr Robot is the first program in which Malek, who plays Elliot Alderson, has been front and centre. Malek has collected several minor prizes for his performances in the USA Network television series and one agrees with the Gold Derby crew that he is overpriced to break through on American TV’s night of nights.
