World Cup Betting Markets

Match result – The most popular football bet is a simple wager on which team will win the match. Remember, this bet is for 90 minutes only, and does not include extra-time or penalties.

Asian handicap – This bet removes the possibility of a draw and offers more balanced odds when one side is clearly superior to the other. Sportsbooks set a ‘handicap’, often +/-0.5 goals or +/-1.5 goals, which is added to the final score of the match to determine the winner of the bet. Obviously, it is impossible to score half a goal, so the result can only be a home or away win.

Double chance – You can bet on home/draw, away/draw or home/away, giving you a chance to win on either outcome at the end of the match. Odds are shorter than backing a team to win but the insurance of covering a draw or an upset within the bet means you are more likely to see a return.

Over/under – This is another very common market among football bettors. Bookmakers set a line on a number of things that happen during a game – such as goals, corners, and cards – and you simply bet whether the teams will combine to go over or under that line. The most common example is over/under 2.5 goals.

Both teams to score – A simple 2-way bet where you predict whether both teams will score within 90 minutes or not.

Result/both teams to score – A progression on the above bet, the result/both teams to score market adds the extra dimension of predicting the result as well. Odds can be very high in this market, but you must predict home, away or draw, as well as whether or not both teams will find the net.

Draw no bet – This is another ‘insurance’ bet where you can back a team to win the match, with the insurance of your stake being returned if the game ends in a draw.

Specials and Other Markets

Correct score – This is a simple bet to predict the final score of the match. Again, the odds will be high due to the difficulty of predicting the exact score over 90 minutes.

First player to score – Pick a player to score the first goal of the game. He must be the first player to score for either side, although some bookmakers don’t include own goals and will refund your stake if the match ends 0-0.

First team to score – As above, but with this market you only need to predict which team will score the first goal of the match.

Corner betting – Most bookmakers also offer corner betting markets, an exotic bet which can give you some interest for the full 90 minutes no matter which side is winning. Wagers include over/under, team to get most corners, race to three, five or seven corners, the total number of corners, and corner handicaps.

Half betting – These markets allow you to bet on most of the above outcomes over the course of the first or second half only.

HT/FT betting – the halftime-fulltime market compels you to predict the result both at the 45-minute mark and the 90-minute mark. For example, you could bet home/home, draw/home, away/home or any other combination. You have to get both HT/FT results correct in order to win the bet.

Card betting – Bookmakers also offer odds on red and yellow cards for each game. If you think a particular fixture is likely to be a fiery one, this can be a very profitable bet. Markets include total cards where you have to predict how many cards or card points will be amassed during the match (sometimes a yellow card is allotted a value of 10 points and a red card 25 points), over/under the number of cards, will there be a red card, and even wagers on particular players to receive a card.
